Our sustainability mission goes beyond efforts to minimize environmental impact. It also includes caring for our people and giving a voice to marginalized communities. Here’s how we make this a reality and how you can help:
As a winery member of Napa Green, we implement more than 100 sustainability and stewardship standards to:
• Save energy & water and increase efficiency
• Prevent waste through recycling, composting, and environmentally preferable purchasing
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the winery’s carbon footprint
• Progress social equity
The philosophy behind Napa Green is holistic, so these standards extend beyond production to hospitality and our general business practices. We use LEDs when possible or keep the lights off all together, we use reclaimed water to keep our landscaping healthy, and we are methodical about recycling and composting.
Our wine packaging satisfies both form and function.
Glass Our bottles are recyclable and lighter weight than traditional glass to minimize our carbon footprint.
Closures We choose 100% recyclable tin capsules for our upper tier wines and go with no capsules for our everyday Fifth Moon wines. We’re working on eliminating tin capsules from our packaging beginning in 2024.
Corks We use compostable Neutrocorks (made from microparticles of natural cork) in our Fifth Moon wines, with the exception of the original White Blend and Red Blend bottlings. These, and our entire Hundred Knot collection, are stopped with carbon negative natural cork.
Often misunderstood, corks are far better for the environment than synthetic alternatives, and they are biodegradable and recyclable. Trees are not harmed when harvested, and the wine industry helps preserve cork forests which are extremely effective at absorbing greenhouse gasses. In fact, according to Amorim, a global supplier of cork, a single cork stopper can absorb 309g of CO2!
Our goal is always for our wines to arrive safely at your door. And we do it with minimal, recyclable packing material.
Boxes 100% recyclable cardboard
Wine Inserts Molded pulp made from post-consumer paper waste that’s diverted from landfills and incinerators. It’s insulating and protective. 100% recyclable and biodegradable.
Marketing Materials Minimal printing. All materials made on 100% recyclable paper.
